Folic acid, vitamin B9 or folate is usually found in green vegetables, fruit juice and cereal. Folic acid is needed, especially when you plan to become pregnant, and the first three months after conception. It can reduce the risk for children with disabilities, particularly spinal defects (NTD), brain (anencephaly) and spinal cord (spina bifida).


Studies have shown that this defect can be reduced up to 70%. That's why you eat is very important to foilk acid during pregnancy. Anenchephaly is the name given to a baby with no brain tissue and will die shortly after it was born. Spina bifida is a defect which can cause spinal cord paralysis, bowel problems, bladder and brain defects.


Risks that can lead to spina bifida

    * Families who have had NTD
    * Once children have NTD pregnancy
    * Taking drugs seizure
    * Diabetes

All women who plan to become pregnant are advised to take folic acid at least 0.4 milligrams and 0.8 milligrams after pregnancy to reduce the risk.
